Jul 11, 10:21am: So, I have been posting about a few themes lately....golf ( of course) accounting woes, and lost panties. Well here is a story that ties them all together. Well, except for the panties....they are absent here....and that seems to be a theme as well ;-)

Remember my takeover of the homeowners association? Well, in some quarters here, I am not, well, to put it mildly, not well liked. Last year, I challenged the board on a few issues, and they didn't like it much. These are all old guys, old enough to be my Dad, and they are very offended that a woman....an unmarried woman...a smart unmarried woman..a smart unmarried woman who will actually speak out, this young whippersnapper, who dared to upset the applecart by actually saying something against the norm!

It was like junior high...my name is/was mud in this neighbourhood. People wouldn't talk to me. Rumours spread. Nasty stuff.I had confided to one person about my depression over Tom's death, and in the minutes of a board meeting, they referred to my emotional instability. Pretty Low stuff. This was the "cadre of old men" who were doing most of the spreading of rumours.

This is also the cadre of men that I overthrew from office ;-) As I have been on the board, doing my thing,the tide has started to turn. As I talk to people during the course of my duties, and through newsletter, etc, and the actions I have taken so far, people who had been told these terrible things about me are realizing that I am not evil incarnate, and I am a pretty good egg...I've managed to do a pretty good job, and get some positive actions done on long standing issues.

OK, long backstory done...here's the story...

I walk into the pro shop at the course the other morning. A foursome of guys are just checking in, and the clubhouse is fairly busy. I walk in, and the pro looks up and says "hey Laurie, How are ya?" The assistant pro says" Hey Laurie..long time no see LOL!".. The girls at the desk say "Hey Laurie...hear you are in a match today...go get them!"
It just so happens that the ladies section is playing that day, and the ladies are trickling in...lots of big Hello's...and "how are ya's" and"jeez, when can I get a game with you" and "do I get to play with you today?"

Honestly,it was just this confluence of events. To an outsider, it would have seemed that I was the most popular, most liked person at the course. The guys who are checking in turn around to see who this "Laurie is"...and sure enough...it was the cadre of old men!!!!!!! So I give them the biggest smile.....say hi, and tell them to have a wonderful round, and that I am sure they will love the course. The most mortal of my enemies actually smiles back ( honestly,I thought his face would break) and asks.."oh, are you a member here?"and I reply, "I sure am, it's a great course, enjoy yourself, have a great time...I have to go, I'm playing a match against another course"

I'm giggling all the way to the T box ;-)

So last night, I'm walking up to the mailbox, and John..who has refused to talk to me for over a year, is out on his porch...I ask him how his round went, and did he enjoy the course...and, he actually responded! Words and everything!!! Previously, he would have just walked away. We had a chat!He asked me if I was a member...Saw another member of the cadre...same thing! This guy says...you are a member there eh? I hear you are a pretty good golfer!

You should have seen the smile on my face as I came back from the mailbox. You know, the number on rule on the golf course is, be cordial, and don't be an asshole.....I wish more people took that lesson onto the course of life..the world would be a better place....
