What can I say? Often too much, sometimes not enough. This is my playground site..just here to have some fun and giggles...I have other sites where I'm all serious-like. C'mon in, have a cup of coffee ( or beverage of your choice) and meander through ;-)

Viva la Resistance!
(Part One) Viva La Resistance (Part Two) Let me state this SU Rocks. It's flexible. It accommodates all sorts of people. It lets them express themselves, lets them stumble in all sorts of ways,..the photobloggers, the political bloggers, the poets, the inspirational bloggers, the critics, the humourists.....even the glitter fairies ;-). Everyone has a place.
I'm all over freedom of expression, it takes all kind of people to make up this world. Just because I hate glittery cats, doesn't mean that you can't enjoy them and put them on you page! Do what makes you happy!
People who are new (and especially those who may have come from other social networking sites) might have some misunderstandings about SU and what SU is all about, they may think it is all about quantity vs. quality.
Stumble Upon is a democratic platform. We are the essential part of the algorithm that makes this place work.We are not however, merely statistics. We are a fine group of discriminating web users, who have the ability to say, we like it, or we don't. Let's not forget that.
Stumbleupon is about CONTENT. It is about QUALITY CONTENT.
- Yes, there are growing pains,
- Yes our explosion of numbers has caused all sorts of "undesireable" effects
- Yes we now have popularity contests and competitions to be "top stumblers"
- Yes, we have all these marketing articles focusing on using stumbleupon to drive traffic to business sites.
- Yes, we now have spammers
Yes, this all pisses me off.
However...I do see some encouraging signs. I see resistance. Viva La Resistance! I see stumblers fighting to keep this place what it is intended to be...Stumblers are becoming vocal about these "undesirable" trends...more stumblers are talking about these issues on their blogs, more are giving thumbs down and writing brilliantly scathing reviews on "problem" sites. Good for them.
Aas with any social network, there are both the technical and cyberculture issues that occur as the network evolves, and SU is unique in that the members do have some ability to affect change by using some of the tools that exist within SU. I am very pleased to see more and more stumblers using these tools to try to influence our evolution.
So here are three issues that have been bugging me lately, and what I see stumblers doing about it.. Viva La Resistance!
The Top Stumbler Issue
Top Stumblers?
Please People...the whole concept is totally juvenile, unnecessary, and totally irrelevant.
It SO smacks of junior high
The official SU top ranking is determined by frequency rating. Quantity over Quality. Did you know there are programs that will auto stumble and rate for you? Set her up..walk away from the computer..instant top rating...yuk...debase the database. The top stumbler status is a carrot designed to increase the database.
There is a well known "friend whore" top stumbler...this stumbler sends out form letters, and requests to everyone and their dog to add them as a friend. The fan ranking? Huge! Number of Reviews? Number of Pages? Quality Content? Not so huge....but lots of "friends". So Top Stumbler in this case, means fuck all.
The top stumbler status is irrelevant. I have been to top stumbler sites...some are very well deserved...excellent content, well presented...again, QUALITY over QUANTITY. They are favorite places for me to go. On the other hand, some of my other favorite sites are far from Top stumbler status...and their pages rock.
So please people.... ignore these artificial rankings...the don't mean a damn thing. Judge the "top stumblers" for yourselves. Find YOUR "Top Stumblers" (part 2)
